As the primary supervisor for an orientation team this summer during my NODA internship at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, I learned a lot about managing a team. As part of my role as the Links’ (orientation leaders) supervisor, I met one-on-one with the students at the beginning, middle, and end of the summer in addition to leading small group meetings when conflict arose between members of the team. In our last meeting of the summer, I was asked to provide a performance appraisal for each of the Links. This appraisal was designed to be developmental, and an opportunity for students to talk through their summer experiences with me. As an artifact, I have included a blank performance appraisal to illustrate the areas in which the staff was evaluated. I helped the Links to develop professional development plans to further their individual growth, but also keep in mind the needs of the people they are serving in their roles and the Student Activities Office as a whole (ACPA & NASPA, 2010). Many of the conversations we had in their one-on-ones revolved around communication with others, conflict resolution, and time management.

In addition to my experience managing a team, I have also had experiences sharing my knowledge with other professionals. I have had the opportunity to present at a few different conferences, allowing me to “create and present materials for formal presentations in the work setting and for professional associations” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 17). I presented at the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District V conference in Chicago in December 2014. I collaborated with my supervisor, as well as professionals at three different institutions in Ohio to create a proposal and presentation for conference attendees. I have also presented at three student conferences throughout my time at BGSU on a variety of topics including “So You Want to Work on a College Campus” “Networking 101,” and “Start off strong, leave a legacy: How to make the most of your organization experience”. Each of these presentations provided me opportunities to collaborate with colleagues, and learn to cater my presentation style to the organizations I was presenting to. Below is the handout I used for the "So You Want to Work on a College Campus" presentation.
